2010 Major: Biology and Philosophy; certificate in Bioinformatics

How has being a Biology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Although I went to law school right after receiving my BA in Biology, I spent the first seven years of my legal career working on patent cases for multinational corporations in China that are mostly in the pharmaceutical industry. In that time, I developed my skills and my reputation in Chinese intellectual property law. Eventually, I was able to transition into my current position as an in-house counsel for a university press in Beijing. But for my background in Biology and the opportunity to enter the legal profession as a patent lawyer, I doubt I would have been able to break into the world of intellectual property law."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Biology programs?

"Treasure your time at Duke and focus on your academics."
