How has being a Biology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"The Duke Biology program shaped me by providing the opportunity to learn and apply biology. My coursework focused on molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry. These studies were augmented by incredible experiences and training in those disciplines and others at the Duke Medical Center in the Department of Biochemistry with mentorship by Dr Patrick J Casey and summer research courses at the Duke Marine Lab. These experiences are the underpinnings that set me on a path working in research and leadership in biopharma."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Biology programs?

"You must take advantage of the incredible faculty and facilities at Duke to get first hand experience in biology beyond required lectures and lab courses. Take the initiative to read about the faculty research interests and go meet them outside of class and ask about what they study. Find a faculty member doing something that is interesting to you and volunteer to work with them on a project you define with that faculty member. There is an incredible opportunity to really learn biology and how to design and conduct experiments through working with Duke Biology's amazing faculty to get involved directly in research from ecology to system biology to marine sciences to genetics to molecular cell biology. Don't be satisfied with only learning in the lecture hall."
