How has being a Biology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Biology was always my first love and a class I connected with starting in middle school. I received a very broad and deep understanding of so many various components of this field of study at Duke. I felt very prepared for medical school with the challenging coursework I encountered during my undergraduate years. I have been a practicing ob/gyn for 17 years and work for an amazing health care organization in Georgia and use my knowledge still to this day."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Biology programs?

"If you are premed specifically, I would encourage you to explore other disciplines while you are at Duke. My religious studies have really helped me to participate in the dei initiatives taking place within our company right now. Taking advanced english classes helped me to become a better communicator, finally I would look ahead and find an opportunity to go abroad. It can be difficult with a premed curriculum but can be done if you look ahead and plan! One of my regrets is not taking enough advantage of all the club offerings at Duke... make time to explore your leisure interests because these are the pieces of life that will bring you balance."
