How has being a Biology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Although my actual degree is in history, I did all the coursework for a biology degree with a concentration in marine biology. My courses and semester at the Marine Lab in Beaufort have given me a strong background in the basics of marine biology, which has helped me greatly in my career. More importantly, though, my undergraduate classes helped develop a scientific and analytical mindset, which arguably more than the information itself, has been very helpful."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Biology programs?

"Don't constrain yourself in what you might consider after undergraduate or graduate school. I have ended up working for 22 rewarding years in a field - wastewater - that I knew nothing about initially and didn't even cross my mind as a possibility when I was in school."
