How has being a Biology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Duke provided an excellent foundation for my medical school education and subsequent career as an academic surgeon. Perhaps even more importantly It has also provided me with a lifetime of interest in areas of biology not directly related to my clinical practice such as animal behavior, diversity in vertebrate physiology and the vast sweep of evolutionary history. If I could go back to Duke and take more classes I'd do it in a heartbeat!"

What advice would you give students in Duke's Biology programs?

"If you're a premed it's a given that Duke biology will provide you a great foundation for medical school. Take advantage of all the non-medical things you can learn too! One day you'll be amazed how understanding sea urchin embryology or the physiology of a bird's lung or foraging behavior by rodents will deepen and enrich how your interpret patients and their very human problems."
