How has being a Biology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"Aside from teaching me the foundational information necessary for a career in medicine, my undergraduate Biology training at Duke also taught me how to think creatively. I clearly recall how Dr. McClay's Cell Biology tests demanded not only knowing all of the information in the text and lectures, but also being able to extend beyond those details and apply that knowledge to experimental scenarios. Also, a central experience of my time in college was my semester abroad in Kenya, studying wildlife management...an opportunity only made possibly by Dr. Grunwald's support in helping me apply my classes toward my degree. The ability to think analytically and the expanded world view afforded by my time in Africa were truly formative experiences."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Biology programs?

"Take advantage of all the incredible opportunities before you. Your professors are dedicated teachers and don't hesitate to reach out to them regarding research opportunities. Also, follow your passion and interest. There are a great number of directions in which one can take their Biology Degree - choose your own best adventure."
