This summer, biology PhD student Madi Chudzik is researching how Chicago’s light pollution affects migrating birds.
Chicago sits on one of North America’s busiest migratory flyways, but its skyline also makes it one of the deadliest cities in the world for migrating birds. Under the mentorship of Dr. Sara Lipshutz and in collaboration with Windy City Bird Lab, Chudzik is out in the field recording birds’ nocturnal flight calls. By listening in, she aims to better understand bird behavior and find ways to make migration safer.
