Stem Cells, Reprogramming, Epigenetics, and Plasticity

One of the wonders of nature is the development of complex multicellular organisms from single cells. Bio221D Developmental Biology is a small lecture course that emphasizes student participation. Students will learn classic and modern approaches while discovering how gene regulation and signaling drive spontaneous self-organization of embryos while providing opportunities to develop life-changing therapies. Invertebrate and vertebrate model systems will be covered. Emergent topics such as reprogramming, regeneration, plasticity, aging, and epigenetic inheritance will be emphasized. The professor will keep the class engaging by sharing enthusiasm, providing historical and social context, and making the material accessible. Required prerequisites: Biology 201L and 202L, or Biology 203L or equivalent.
