How has being a Biology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I loved the biology program at Duke. I think it was challenging and very formative as far as learning how to learn a lot of information in a short period of time (a skill that proved necessary for medical school), participating in research, and creating a foundation of specialized knowledge that I could build on when I continued on to medical school. Being passionate about what I was learning, and having a say in it, made my undergraduate experience so enjoyable!"

What advice would you give students in Duke's Biology programs?

"Biology is such a broad field that I think it's important to try to identify the general direction you want to take with your career so you can tailor your experiences at Duke around that, such as by choosing a biology concentration, participating in research, or taking specialized classes that could help you later on. For example, try to decide whether you want to enter the health professions, do research (and on what subject), do teaching, enter industry, etc. Personally, while this is not strictly necessary, I do wish I had taken an anatomy and/or physiology class at Duke so that I could've had some more background knowledge when I was learning those topics in medical school."
