1995 Major: Biology

How has being a Biology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"My career has been focused on the business side of healthcare, where I've held a number of operating roles at medical device companies (marketing, business development). Having a science and biology background provides me with the building blocks to make business decisions grounded in technical science. I now lead my own medtech start-up and I lead the medtech investment strategy for a lifesciences venture capital fund. With a degree in Biology, I can think deeply about the science of a technology and the clinical impacts for the patient."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Biology programs?

"Science is so important for the world we live in and there are many careers that leverage a Duke Biology degree. Having a Biology degree on your resume provides a few clues as to your skill set -- analytical, data driven, able to think about complex problems, etc. But, a Biology degree does not mean you must be practicing science every day as a doctor or researcher. There are careers in consulting, banking, medtech and pharma where you can leverage your scientific knowledge but pursue different functional disciplines. A biology degree from Duke provides an excellent foundation for whatever it is you pursue."
