1997 Major: Biology and Environmental Science & Policy; minor in Chemistry

How has being a Biology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"I was a biology and environmental science and policy double major with a chemistry minor. When I went to Duke I was preparing to go to either a graduate biology program or medical school but made a pivot in my junior year to apply to law school. I have been able to use my science background in my legal career working in intellectual property law, now on behalf of a pharmaceutical company. Having my biology and chemistry background from Duke has been critical to my current work."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Biology programs?

"I had no idea what intellectual property really was at Duke and I would be happy to talk to any Duke biology students about what kind of careers I have seen with biology degrees. The students have all made a great choice in choosing to study biology! Please don't hesitate to reach out to me on LinkedIn or through the Duke Alumni office."
