Christine Shen, B.S. 2015

Resident Physician, UCSD –San Diego, CA

2015 Major: Biology; minor in Chemistry

How has being a Biology graduate from Duke helped shape you personally and/or professionally?

"It taught me to think critically and introduced me to great research mentors. The biology curriculum at Duke was rigorous and helped prepare me for the academic challenges of medical school."

What advice would you give students in Duke's Biology programs?

"Seek out research early if that's something you're genuinely interested in. I also recommend supplementing the biology degree with classes in other disciplines such as CS/stats/econ to make yourself a more well-rounded candidate in the job market if you're looking for future jobs that are not strictly research or medicine related. I found it difficult to recruit for non-research jobs, even consulting, because I had not taken many classes outside of the biology major."
