For students graduating Fall 2026 or later
Beginning in the Fall 2026, a maximum of one Biology course numbered 101-199 can count as an elective for Biology major or minor requirements. This will apply to currently enrolled students and to students matriculating Fall 2026 or later.
With this change, at least 4 of the 5 elective courses for the Bio major/minor must be at or above the 200-level.
Which Biology classes can qualify?
BIO 111CN; BIO 128FS; BIO 132; BIO 134CN (PHIL/ETHICS 134CN); BIO 136CNS (EVANTH 136CNS); BIO 138FS; BIO 148FS (ENVIRON 148FS); BIO 154 (GLHLTH 154); BIO 159 (MARSCI 201/ECS 205); BIO 189FS (AAAS 187FS). A qualifying course can count if registered under the Biology course number or under one of the officially cross-listed course numbers.
What does this mean for me?
- Majors and minors in the classes of 2027, 2028, 2029:
If you have already taken a qualifying course, Stellic should now include a maximum of one approved (qualifying) 100-level course towards your Biology major or minor requirements. If you’ve also enrolled for Neurosci 102/Psych 107/Neurosci 102CC and want to switch which 100-level course Stellic is counting for your Biology requirements, reach out to jill.foster@duke.edu. Spring 2027 majors: If you take a qualifying course in Spring, it will need to be manually programmed into Stellic after you’re officially enrolled.
- Students matriculating Fall 2026 or later: Once you’ve declared a Biology major or minor, Stellic will automatically count a maximum of one qualifying 100-level Biology course towards your requirements. The Century Course, Neurosci 102CC, will not count towards Biology major or minor requirements for students matriculating Fall 2026 or later.
