Password Protection
Let's face it -- most of us don't update our passwords very often. And secure passwords can be hassle to type in. But waiting too long to update your passwords can lead to a cyber-disaster if someone (or, more likely, a program) hacks into your computer. Here are two simple guidelines to help keep you safe from unwanted intrusions. (1) Update your passwords at least every six months. (2) Come up with a password that is at least 7 characters long, and contains a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Passwords are case-sensitive, so mixing cases can add further security. For more on password security and how to change your NetID, see: http://www.oit.duke.edu/email-accounts/netid/password_faq.php.

Can CPPAS Get Me a Free Computer?
The CPPAS (Computer Purchase Program, Arts & Sciences) provides faculty and staff in Biology and Ev Anth with a Mac or PC every few years. The details of CPPAS have changed several times during the past few years (during the economic downturn, CPPAS was temporarily suspended, for instance). You can read more about eligibility and how CPPAS works here: http://trinity.duke.edu/technology/support?p=computer-purchase-program-cppas. If you think you qualify for an upgrade, check out the program and see Jennifer Barrows in 148 BioSci about ordering a new computer.

The Link
If you use computers in teaching, you may want to consider what the Link has to offer. Located in Perkins Library, the Link has several classrooms and conference rooms of various sizes (seating 8 - 50 people). A variety of computer and multimedia equipment is available, and software can be installed on the computers for instructional purposes. Rooms and equipment can be reserved for an entire semester or just one session, and the facility has a dedicate staff on-site that provides training and support. You can read more about the Link here: http://link.duke.edu/.

Where's My Printer?
Since shared printers are everywhere there is very little reason for individuals to have their own printer - but there are some important steps to take to make sure you can print where you'd like.
