The Biology Department at Duke University is not only committed to its research and university teaching missions, but also prioritizes sharing biology with the public at large. Outreach from Duke Biology has fallen into three major avenues. Faculty, staff, and students in Biology, have...
K-12 school outreach
- hosted one or more grade school students as researchers in their laboratories
- present in on- campus outreach activities for grade schoolers (e.g., FEMMES)
- give presentations or workshops at local grade schools
- worked with grade school teachers to develop science-related activities
- serve as judges for local science fairs
- write books (or book sections) intended to be used in K-12 classes (e.g., Dean Nowicki's high school Biology textbook)
- worked with companies to develop educational materials to be implemented at schools (e.g., Carolina Biological Supply Natural Selection with Drosophila kit)
Public outreach
- given advertised public-forum live presentations, such as Science Café and Periodic Tables
- led walks and talks to students and/ or the public in and around Duke Forest, the Duke Herbarium, and the Highlands Nature Center
- discussed their or others' research in the mass media
Consultancy
- testified before Congressional committees on issues related to their specialty
- participated in Forest Service workshops associated with broad issues such as climate change
- advised national academies and federal funding agencies about scientific priorities
